How Search Results are Determined
When you search for deals on Groupon, the results you see and the order in which they appear are determined as follows:
1. Relevance: The words that you type into the search box will be matched to deals classified with that wording. If for example you search for "restaurant", deals internally classified with that wording will appear and they will predominantly be deals for restaurants. The more relevant the results to what you have searched for, the higher up the page they will appear.
2. Proportion: Unless the nature of your search makes it specific to a particular business line, the results will include a mix of Local, Goods and Travel deals. The proportion of each of these deal types will depend on the relevance of the search.
3. Personalisation: If you have provided any location preferences in your Groupon account, the results will be narrowed down to include deals near that location. If you have provided Groupon with access to your mobile phone location, the location data from your phone will also be used to determine results.
4. Ranking: The relevant search results are in turn ranked by past performance. A deal with a lot of clicks and purchases will be ranked higher. New deals will also be boosted up the search rankings to provide them with exposure and compensate for the lack of past performance data.
