Gdansk is the capital of the Pomeranian Voivodeship in northern Poland. The city is located on the Baltic Sea and has several shipyards and the country's most important seaport. In the 1980s, the Lenin Shipyard was the centre of the opposition movement around the Solidarity trade union under the leadership of Lech Wałęsa. Together with the port city of Gdynia and Sopot, Gdansk forms the so-called Tricity. Together with Elbing and Thorn, Danzig was the leading Prussian Hanseatic city in the 14th century.
